A Walk Through Brazil

Brazilian Patria Week
On the occasion of 185th Independence Day of the Federative Republic of Brazil and to celebrate 54 years of good relationship with Indonesia, the Brazilian Embassy hosts a series of exciting events and festivities at Bentara Budaya Jakarta from September 6 to 11.
The cultural week themed 'A Walk through Brazil' will take you beyond football, samba, carnivals, coffee and the Amazon jungle which are characteristic of Brazil. The photo exhibition by João Paulo Barbosa, a talented Brazilian photographer, captures the rich variety of Brazilian landscapes and the people. The paintings by Deusa Blümke, a Brazilian living in Jakarta, evoke the artist's passion for her native country. The movies provide a glimpse of history as experienced by Japanese immigrants in Brazil, the lives of the first Brazilian industrial entrepreneur, Baron of Mauá, and of the great Brazilian composer, Villa Lobos. Other movies show many facets of Brazilians–playful, adventurous, humorous and serious. Musical presentations and dance lessons focus on the richness of Brazilian rhythm - explosive and dynamic - generated by Brazilian and African drums, enriched with immigrants' influence and tempered just right by the tropics.

Capoeira shows and workshops by Brazilians and Indonesians illustrate that art and dance are a wonderful means of breaking cultural barriers and reducing emotional divides among geographically distant peoples. And a workshop on plastic surgery will guide you not only through the aesthetics but also the more important restorative and corrective aspects of this branch of medicine, pioneered and continuously perfected by Brazilian doctors. During the week, you can also bring home samples of Brazilian handicrafts featured by the Association of Brazilians in Indonesia. There will also be a reading corner for those who are interested in browsing our collection of books on Brazil. Dance and Portuguese lessons will also be available for the more adventurous. On September 11, Groupo de Capoeira Mandinga Brasileira will present a Capoeira Musical Drama at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta.
